The Caledonian Canal

Introduction
Words alone cannot begin describe the beauty of the Great Glen. Therefore, the account of our 10th wedding anniversary treat to ourselves is mainly a pictorial one. The pictures are slightly large in both file and physical size (640x480). However, I feel that the nature of the subject warrants it. I hope you agree. All photos were taken with a Fuji Finepix 1400 Zoom at 1280x960 with normal (x8) compression. Here's the map of our route:-

We hired a 32' x 11' cruiser, Tantallon Castle, from Caley Cruisers, based in Inverness.

Caley Cruisers

This was to be a return visit to the Caledonian for us and the level of tuition had certainly improved significantly. Following our comprehensive pep-talk, we proceeded in convoy through Tomnahurich Swing Bridge and thence to Dochgarroch Lock.

En route to Dochgarroch Lock

This was our first glimpse of the stunning scenery which was to prevail for the entire cruise. The first lock was much fun with 9 boats, most with inexperienced crews, eventually making their way into Dochgarroch Lock. This was the view from the chamber of the lock as we left.

Leaving Dochgarroch Lock

Many of our fellows continued on to Urquhart Bay on Loch Ness - but the strengthening wind urged us to stay put so we tied up for the night below Dochgarroch Lock. Next morning we set off for Loch Ness..........
