A quintessentially rural canal, the 33 mile long Grantham traverses three shire counties

The Partnership Subcommittees

Commerce Sub-Group

  • Business & commercial interests have large parts to play in:
    • Determining the appropriate development plans for Holme Pierrepont and Grantham Basin
    • Building the business case for restoration of the Canal
    • Maximising the community benefits of restoration
  • Probable interested parties include:
    • Farmers & landowners
    • Other local business interests
    • BW Commercial Development
    • Cotgrave Partnership
    • Grantham Town Centre Management Partnership
    • Holme Pierrepont Partnership
  • An appropriate nominee is sought to initiate this Sub-Group

Community Relations Sub-Group

  • Hitherto, the principal routes of engagement between the GCP and Canal-side communities have been via:
    • Councillor representatives of the 6 GCP Local Authorities
    • 'Waterfront'/ `Grantham Canal News'
    • Periodic circulation of information to - and occasional consultation of Parish and Town Councils
    • Individual GCRS / GNA members
  • It is proposed that this situation be enhanced by formation of a Community Relations Sub-Group, to better reflect community wishes and determine the optimum communication and consultation media
  • GCP members (especially Councillors) are asked to advise how we should go about this

Environment Sub-Group

  • Currently represented on the GCP by English Nature
  • Additionally, the following have been consulted:
    • Countryside Agency - CPRE
    • Environment Agency (owners of Trent Lock No.1)
    • Leicestershire & Rutland Wildlife Trust
    • Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust
    • Nottingham Herpetofauna Group
    • Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust
    • Rushcliffe Barn Owl Project
  • Neil Pike (English Nature) is proposed as Executive Group member responsible for establishing the Environment Sub-Group

Heritage Sub-Group

  • The Grantham is a classic 1790s `canal mania' rural contour canal - in remarkably good condition, 75 years after closure. It never had a dramatic built environment and has lost icons such as the Straddle Warehouse at Grantham. Its restoration case needs to make the most of its remaining heritage and also consider the revival of relevant `heritage skills'
  • The GCP currently lacks an archaeological survey, archivist and historical records etc. - which play an important part in funding bids
  • It is proposed that folowing be approached to advise on rectifying this situation:
    • English Heritage
    • LA museums organisations
    • Local history groups
    • Railway & Canal Historical Society

Leisure & Tourism Sub-Group

  • L & T officers of the 6 GCP LAs have previously worked together to produce Grantham Canal leaflets and `The Romantic Canal'. The former are now out-of-print and there is currently a dearth of tourist information about the Canal
  • Tourism is now a specific interest of EMDA
  • Leisure interests previously consulted include:
    • Anglers' representatives
    • British Horse Society
    • Cyclists' Touring Club
    • Trent Valley & Vale of Belvoir Riding Association
  • It is proposed that the
    • 6 LA Leisure & Tourism Officers
    • BW Marketing & Communications Manager
    • Publicity Officers of the GCRS and GNA
    • One or more Vale of Belvoir publicans / hoteliers
    • A representative of Belvoir Castle
...be asked to form the Leisure & Tourism Sub-Group - initially to improve awareness of the Canal - and to engage appropriate interest groups

Restoration Sub-Group

  • Continuing 30+ years of Grantham Canal restoration
  • Membership:
    • Grantham Canal Restoration Society
    • Grantham Navigation Association
    • Inland Waterways Association
    • British Waterways
  • Executive Group member - Bill Whalley (GCRS Chairman)
  • The GCRS currently meets monthly and joint GCRS/GNA meetings are held periodically. Should some of these be transformed to Restoration Sub-Group meetings?
  • The GCRS and GNA have joint memberships but separate organisations. As the principal vehicles for the public to show support for the work of the Partnership, could these be simplified and their roles clarified?
